How it all started...

It all started with the idea that a summer school should not only educate students on the formal educational level but also on the informal intercultural level which opens doors and widens horizons. The Summer School in the Himalayas project was launched in August 2015 for the first time with 13 participating students from various faculties and different study areas of China-NRW Alliance institutions. It was created to give students a first insight into this beautiful country and its rich culture by offering lectures, excursions, and Hindi lessons for beginners in six different cities. The Summer School started in Delhi with a city tour through the old town including important sights and temples, continued on to Dehradun and Anjanisain in the hills of the Himalayas, and ended in Haridwar, known as the 'Gateway of Gods'. Furthermore, the students went on daytrips to Mussoorie, a small town situated in the foothills of the Garwal Himalayan ranges and Rishikesh, the world's most famous capital of yoga and 'Place of Sagas'. The lectures that were offered comprised topics such as, pre- and post-colonial history, marginalized communities in Indian society, the role of religion, and issues and challenges of development in India. In 2016, a trip to the Taj Mahal was added to the optional program due to its popularity. After running for two successful years, we invited a lecturer from the University of Cologne to design the academic program and offer a class for both the German and also the Indian participants from our partner universities. Our first topic in 2017 was "Graphic Literature" where the students followed in the footsteps of German and Indian authors. In 2018, the location of the Summer School was shifted to our partner university Symbiosis International University in Pune to strengthen our long-standing partnership. The topic for 2018 and 2019 was "Education and Social Stratification in India" and due to its popularity the topic will be the same again in 2020.

Looking forward to your applications!
