At-Risk Scholar Support

As part of its global responsibility, the University of Cologne is in charge of far-reaching support structures for researchers who are at risk and whose academic freedom is restricted.

The comprehensive counselling and cooperation offer enables researchers to continue their work and at the same time opens up new international collaboration opportunities for academics working at the University of Cologne. Close cooperation with the Cologne International Forum and the Welcome Centre not only provides administrative support, but above all enables direct integration into the international research community.

The University of Cologne is a member of the worldwide Scholars at Risk network and a founding member of the German section of SAR. As a member of the SAR Germany Steering Committee and the NRW regional group, the UoC actively promotes the networking of institutions that are committed to supporting researchers at risk and refugees. To enable academics at risk to continue their research activities, the University of Cologne also cooperates with international organisations such as the Scholar Rescue Fund of the International Institute of Education and the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA).

The At-Risk Scholar Support of the Department of International Affairs connects researchers at risk or who have fled to the faculties of the University of Cologne and supports chairs and working groups that would like to take on academics at risk. This also includes the search for suitable funding programmes, the coordination of applications and the administration of scholarships.

Other services offered by At-Risk Scholar Support aim to optimise the basic prerequisites for an academic or non-academic career and to meet the particular social and bureaucratic challenges faced by researchers and their families.
