Aesthetics of Norse Mythology: A transnational hybrid seminar

Project "Norse Mythology"

Zsófia Németh studied Northeuropean Studies at the University of Strasbourg. In summer 2022, she took part in the transnational hybrid seminar „Making myth visible. Aesthetics of Norse Mythology between National Romanticism ans contemporary receptions“. In this video, she talks about the seminar’s content and what a typical lesson looked like. She talks about difficulties and benefits of team building while studying in a hybrid setting with students from other universities and the enriching experience to meet in real life at the seminar’s final symposium in Cologne.

Project "Variablity in Speech Production and Perception"

Proceedings of the international Paris-Cologne seminar on Variability in Speech Production and Perception

Our project has put together virtual conference papers which document the outcome of the transnational seminar between Cologne (Universität zu Köln, IfL Phonetics) and Paris (Université de Paris): "Proceedings of the international Paris-Cologne seminar on Variability in Speech Production and Perception". In international groups, the experiments themselves were planned and possible outcomes were derived based on research literature and hypotheses; however, they were not carried out in the real world of experimental linguistics – not yet.

We were very lucky for Dr. Zellou to also do a workshop with us on  
“Using synthetic speech in linguistics research“. The theory behind  
this fascinating topic was well explained and illustrated by having a  
closer look at the Amazon Polly and Microsoft Azure text-to-speech  
systems.

Talk by Dr. Georgia Zellou – Associate Professor of Linguistics, UC Davis, USA

Project "Variability in Speech Production and Perception"

Dr. Georgia Zellou is an expert on phonetic detail and its role in  
cognition as well as in clinical contexts. She is currently working on  
coarticulation (e.g., nasalization) and synthetic speech at the  
University Paris Diderot.
The first talk Dr. Zellou joined us for was on “The role of  
coarticulatory variation in speaker recognition”, thereby picking up a  
topic that had sparked many discussions during the seminar.

Talk by Prof. Douglas H. Whalen – Haskins Laboratories, New Haven, CT, USA

Prof. Douglas H. Whalen joined the IVAC Seminar "Variability in Speech Production and Perception" on 9th December 2021 for a special session on „Coarticulation and Planning“. He gave us some fascinating insights into his work followed by a lively discussion. Especially as we had read some of his publications in the weeks previous to the talk, Prof. Whalen was able to clarify questions we still had and open up new ones that will continue to inspire us as the rest of the course unfolds.

Project "Science Communication Workshops"

Prof. Dr. Kirsten Schlüter gives a brief overview of the 14th annual Winter Meeting on Health, Environment, and Education which was held digitally for the first time and showcased the results of the Science Communication Workshops. The conference addressed various themes such as climate change and the Covid 19 pandemic and engaged students from three different continents and several study programs.

Project "Transnational Aspects of Finnish Literature"

Dominique Wagener studies Finnish Literature at the University of Cologne. In this video, she talks about her participation in the course "Transnational Aspects of Finnish Literature", which was offered in cooperation with the University of Turku, EduVEnture and the network j o l n e s - Joint Learning in Northern European Studies. For her it was a very enriching experience, not only in terms of the course topic, but also in terms of the opportunity to work together with students from other European countries.

Project "Black Lives Matter and their Historical Legacies: Perspectives from Europe and the United States"

The Eduventure team was able to join a session of the seminar "Black Lives Matter and their Historical Legacies: Perspectives from Europe and the United States", which is co-taught by Dr. Hackenesch (UoC) and Dr. Florvil (University of New Mexico). Beside having an immediate insight into the atmoshpere of the seminar and seeing how benefitial the exchange between UoC students and students of the University of New Mexico is experienced, we were able to spend a few minutes discussing other aspects of this unique transantlantic cooperation with some of the participating students from the UoC.

This course is part of EduVenture Cologne (IVAC) and j o l n e s. EduVEnture Cologne unites thirteen transnational teaching projects from three faculties of the University of Cologne.

A Transatlantic Conversation - Dr. Silke Hakenesch (UoC) and Dr. Tiffany Florvil (UNM)

Project "Black Lives Matter and their Historical Legacies: Perspectives from Europe and the United States"

Dr. Silke Hakenesch, Associate Professor at the Institute for North American History at the University of Cologne, and Dr. Tiffany Florvil, Associate Professor of 20th-century European Women’s and Gender History at the University of New Mexico,  Albuquerque, presented their project during a virtual discussion organized and hosted by "Deutsches Haus" at NYU and the New York Office of the University of Cologne. 
This is a shortened version of the video of the event “Society in Transition: A Transatlantic Conversation on Black Lives Matter”. Beside having an immediate insight into the atmoshpere of the seminar and seeing how benefitial the exchange between UoC students and students of the University of Kentucky is experienced, we were able to spend a few minutes discussing other aspects of this unique transantlantic cooperation with some of the participating students.

The Eduventure team met with Myrthe from Radboud University, Nijmegen, who is one of the participating students in the seminar which is a cooperation between several European universities. Project "International Blended Learning Seminar: Public History in European Perspective"

The Eduventure team met with Wilhelm from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris, who is one of the participating students in the seminar which is a cooperation between several European universities. His Haitian background sparked his interest in the topic of postcolonialism and the various points of views represented in the course. Even though he usually prefers to work alone he feels motivated by the teams they work in.

The Eduventure team met with Michal from the SWPS Warsaw who is one of the participating students in the seminar which is a cooperation between several European universities. He is impressed that, while having so many lecturers and students involved, the communication via digital means alone is working extremly well. Nonetheless he is hoping to meet everyone in person if the planned excursion to Brussels can be realized.

The Eduventure team met with Gian from the UTE Lucerne who is one of two assistants supporting the seminar. The seminar is using the e-learning platform Moodle and one of Gian's main tasks is to ensure that all participating students have proper access to the materials provided there.

The project involves several European partner universities and the EduVEnture team had the chance to talk to students from Lucerne, Berlin, Nijmegen, Warsaw, and Paris. Students described their expectations and expieriences with the course so far and team was able to gain very interesting insights into this project. The interviews will be available on the project´s website soon.

14th Winter Meeting of the International Consortium for Interdisciplinary Education about Health and the Environment

Project "Science Communication Workshops"

On December 4-5, 2020, students participating in this project presented their work at this interdisciplinary conference. 

The 14th Winter Meeting of the International Consortium for Interdisciplinary Education about Health and the Environment is the result of a visionary idea conceived and spearheaded by Prof. Dr. Klaus Klein, now retired Professor of Biology and Didactics at the University of Cologne, to bring together the fields of education, environmental sciences, and public health. Since its inception, this conference has engaged more than one-hundred scientists from six continents as well as nearly a thousand students and other young scholars from throughout the hemispheres to bring diversity to scientific areas, while unifying an interdisciplinary commitment to abandon archaic and siloed towers of thought. This year’s theme – Health, Environment, and Education in Challenging Times – continued the time-honored tradition of international exchange and collaboration.
