Second Degree Course
If you have already completed your studies in Germany, you can apply for a second degree programme at the University of Cologne (Bachelor, Staatsexamen). If you have completed your studies abroad, you can apply for a first degree programme. There is a uniform procedure for EU citizens (and Germans with equal status under admission law) and non-EU citizens. You apply exclusively via the online application portal Klips 2.0 and select the second degree option.
The following deadlines apply:
- For the winter semester: July 15th (Date of receipt) resp. July 31st for degree programmes without admission restriction
- For the summer semester: January 15th (Date of receipt) resp. January 31st for degree programmes without admission restriction
- Applications for human medicine and dentistry are submitted directly via Hochschulstart. Separate application deadlines apply.

If your university has not yet issued a degree certificate / diploma on the basis of your recently completed studies before the application deadline, you can upload a provisional certificate of graduation from the examination office showing your final degree grade and graduation date in KLIPS 2.0.
Without a completed first degree at a German higher education institution, you cannot apply for a second degree. If you are in the final phase of your first degree and cannot submit proof of graduation by the end of the application deadline, you must apply for a first degree without proof.
Language proof:
We recognise a completed course of study in Germany in German as proof of language proficiency. Otherwise, please submit an appropriate proof together with the required application documents. We accept the following certificates:
- TestDaF TDN 4 in all parts of the examination
- DSH 2*
- Deutsches Sprachdiplom, Stufe II der KMK (DSD II)
- Telc C1 Hochschule
- Telc C2
- Goethe-Institut C1-Zertifikat
- ÖSD C2
- Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) mit Fach Deutsch
* Only DSH of higher education institutions with registered examination regulations in accordance with the provisions of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).
According to the current DSH regulations, certain international school-leaving certificates, e.g. from German-speaking regions, are recognised as exceptions or as equivalent. If you have any questions, please contact us via our contact form.
