The University of Cologne defines itself as an institution that is free from discrimination and that provides a safe environment for open and constructive debate, based on the principles of openness, tolerance and adherence to the rule of law. In the event of racist, antisemitic or otherwise discriminatory statements or actions, we will comprehensively examine all legal remedies available to us and utilize them to the fullest extent necessary.
In addition to academic freedom, the university is fully committed to fundamental rights like freedom of speech, the right to protest and freedom of assembly. The responsible public authority or the police decide on the approval and continuation of demonstrations and assemblies (such as protest camps) in publicly accessible spaces. In this regard, we place our trust in the relevant constitutional criteria and procedures, and we respect the decisions made by the responsible authorities.
If members or guests of the University of Cologne should experience harassment or even discrimination as a result of actions or circumstances within the University of Cologne, we will provide guidance and consultation on an individual basis in exercising their rights. Once the facts of the case have been clarified, we will make our own decisions to protect the rights of our members and guests, if necessary.
In light of our historical responsibility, we express our solidarity with the people of Israel and our Israeli partner institutions, with whom we have close ties. Furthermore, our sympathy goes out to all Palestinian civilian victims who have been affected by the war in Gaza. We are concerned about maintaining peace throughout the entire region. We are convinced that academic exchange and scientific cooperation can be a positive contribution to the well-being of people in the conflict region of the Middle East.
