Statement on the situation in Israel and the Middle East

Rectorate of the University of Cologne

The University of Cologne has many ties to partner universities, institutions as well as to scientists and students in Israel and in the Middle East. In view of the terror attacks in Israel on 7 October and the string of events that have resulted, we view a possible further escalation of the conflict with great concern. Our thoughts are with our partners, their family members and friends in Israel, a country towards which we bear a particular historical responsibility and with which we enjoy a unique relationship. Furthermore, we are concerned about peace in the entire region.

The terror attacks against Israel and their repercussions have not left the members of the University of Cologne unscathed. In this context, we expect political discussions to continue to be conducted openly and respectfully on our campus. We would like to ask all students and colleagues to especially be sensitive to those who need support and help in this situation, and if necessary to contribute to de-escalating the situation. The Rectorate and the Senate have pledged further dialogue in relation to current and future developments in Israel and the Middle East.
