UNESCO MOST BRIDGES Hub for ‘Planetary Wellbeing’: Researching the relationships between health, climate protection and biodiversity
The University of Cologne has been selected to host a UNESCO MOST BRIDGES Hub. The hub ‘Planetary Wellbeing and Ecological Flourishing’ deals with the connections between human health, climate protection and the conservation of biodiversity. The centre combines expertise from the humanities, environmental and natural sciences and incorporates findings from the environmental humanities into the One Health concept, which aims to promote intergenerational well-being. The University of Cologne co-operates with international partners such as the Club of Rome, Princeton University and other scientific institutions to develop innovative solutions for global challenges in the field of sustainability.

‘Magnificent plant’: A current article in the Cologne University Magazine about the plant scientists at the CEPLAS Cluster of Excellence
At the Excellence Cluster CEPLAS, plant scientists are researching how plants adapt to changing environmental conditions and thrive in extreme habitats. The aim is to make these insights applicable to agriculture and to genetically optimize plants so they can better cope with climate stress in the future. Central to this research are the amaranth plant, which Professor Markus Stetter is investigating as a potential "future raw material," and soil microbes, whose role in plant protection is being explored by Professor Alga Zuccaro. The shared goal is to create an agricultural system that requires less fertilizer and pesticides while enhancing the resilience of plants.

Innovative communication projects wanted: Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) promotes topic proposals on sustainable mobility, among other things
The competition by Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) is looking for creative minds: Students, PhD candidates, and young researchers from all disciplines are invited to submit innovative ideas for communicating future technologies like geothermal energy and hydrogen, as well as socially relevant topics such as sustainable mobility and social justice. The top ten projects will each receive 10,000 euros in funding and support for implementation. Winners benefit from exciting science communication workshops and gain access to the alumni network. The submission deadline is November 25, 2024.

UoC wins the city cycling competition 2024: Award from the City of Cologne in the ‘Universities/Universities of Applied Sciences’ category
On 30 October, the City of Cologne celebrated the conclusion of the ‘City Cycling’ competition 2024 with a reception. Mayor Andreas Wolter, representing Mayoress Henriette Reker, honoured the participants and presented awards to the best teams. In the ‘Universities/Universities of Applied Sciences’ category, the University of Cologne took first place with over 44,600 kilometres cycled.
Particularly pleasing was the participation of numerous sub-teams, which ensured additional friendly competition.
The three winning cycling teams deserve special mention: the team from the Mercator Institute took first place, followed by the Kinderhaus Paramecium and the WiSo Stadtradel team.
The University of Cologne took part in the city cycling campaign for the second time this year and for the first time in the university-wide competition. On the initiative of the Centre for Teacher Education (ZfL) and its employee Stefan Dittmann-Zöllner in particular, the campaign was communicated more intensively this year and thus ensured that the university came in 7th place of all teams with the most kilometres cycled within the city of Cologne.

Environmental lawyer provides practical insights: As part of the ELC lecture ‘Environmental law in planning and authorisation procedures’
As part of the lecture ‘Environmental Law in Planning and Approval Procedures’ by Dr Andreas Hamacher, Phillipp Schiller, municipal legal advisor in the Office for Law, Public Procurement and Insurance of the City of Cologne, will give a lecture on his work as a fully qualified lawyer in the administration of a city with over a million inhabitants and provide an insight into the practical issues in the field of environmental law. Symposium for sustainable chemistry 2024: On 25 November 2024, hosted by the Cologne Graduate School Chemistry
The Symposium for Sustainable Chemistry 2024 of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Cologne Graduate School Chemistry will take place on 25 November 2024 from 16:00. The venue is the Kurt-Alder-Hall at Greinstr. 4 in Cologne. The programme consists of four different lectures and the possibility of a get-together. The symposium is organised by the doctoral student representatives of the Cologne Graduate School Chemistry. Sustainable chemistry focuses on the development of processes that reduce waste and utilise renewable resources.

Project proposals wanted: ‘Green classroom’ at the Pulheim stream celebrates its tenth anniversary
The Institute of Geography at the University of Cologne has been using the Pulheim stream for its field research since 2008. In 2015, a special building with an online meteo station and a learning centre for children and young people was also built there. Several times a year, kindergartens and schools use this ‘green classroom’, neighbouring sections of the stream and adjacent bodies of water such as the Abtsmühlenbach for discovery expeditions and biological projects. The Pulheim Stream Maintenance Association would like to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the cooperation with the University of Cologne and the learning location next year with a week of projects and events from 12 to 16 May 2025. Inventory of the university's outdoor facilities: Optimised management of the entire Cologne campus planned
Anyone currently seeing people with laser measuring devices on the university campus is witnessing a survey of the outdoor facilities. The University of Cologne is preparing to re-tender the management of its outdoor spaces. In addition to its many buildings, the campus includes plazas, paths, trees, and lawns that need to be maintained. A consulting firm is currently assessing how these tasks can best be handled by external companies. The goal of Department 5, Building and Property Management, is to achieve a qualitatively, economically, and ecologically optimized management of the entire campus.

Together with its network partners, the Cologne police is organising a day of action on Wednesday 16 October on the subject of ‘Visibility and safety in road traffic’. In front of the main building of the University of Cologne on Albertus-Magnus-Platz, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., interested parties can get advice from experts and have minor bicycle repairs carried out at the mobile bicycle testing station of ADAC Nordrhein e.V.

Clean-Up Day organised by the Studierendenwerk: On 10 October from 2-5 pm on the university meadow
On 10 October from 2-5 pm the Kölner Studierendenwerk is organising a clean-up on the university meadow at the Zülpicher Straße canteen ogether with the K.R.A.K.E. (Kölner Rhein-Aufräum-Kommando-Einheit) e.V.. The AWB provides rubbish bags and gloves and then collects the collected rubbish to dispose of it properly. Fritz-Kola will also provide drinks for all those who help.

MESH Symposium 2024: From 17-19 October under the title ‘Multispecies Conviviality’
From 17 to 19 October, the annual MESH Symposium 2024 entitled ‘Multispecies Conviviality’ will take place in the new seminar building at the University of Cologne. It will shed light on the coexistence of humans and non-human species in urban, agricultural and industrial environments. Interdisciplinary lectures, from archaeology to environmental sciences, will address topics such as biodiversity and planetary health. Keynote speakers are Alison Pouliot and Eben Kirksey. AStA bicycle repair shop now available at the bike station: The service is both for students and employees of the University of Cologne
The AStA bicycle repair shop has moved. Since 7 October 2024, it has been located directly in the bike station at Albertus-Magnus-Platz, 50931 Cologne. Both students and employees of the university can drop by and have their bike repaired. Experienced students and two bike mechanics are on hand to provide cheap spare parts and free assistance. No appointment is necessary.

Auerbach Lecture with Kohei Saito: “Marx's communism in the age of planetary crisis”
As part of the Auerbach Lectures, Professor Kohei Saito (Philosophy, Tokyo) will speak about the urgent ecological crisis of the Anthropocene on 9 December 2024 at 6 pm. Saito will present Marx's concept of ‘degrowth communism’ as an alternative to capitalist approaches and ecological exploitation. This model strives to turn away from the need for growth and technological utopia. The event will be held at the Japanese Cultural Institute Cologne. The event will be held in English.

Travelling circus for sustainable education: Critical learning for democracy and sustainability from 28 - 30 October
The Travelling Circus is a TU Berlin networking project that focuses on critical teaching and learning about sustainability and democracy. From 28-30 October 2024, the third station will take place at the University of Göttingen, bringing together around 45 participants from various educational contexts. The format promotes open exchange instead of traditional workshops, and participation is free of charge as travel and accommodation costs are covered. The aim of the project is to network a diverse group of up to 100 people through various stations.

UoC once again Fairtrade University: Focus on sustainable consumption and social responsibility
The University of Cologne has been recognised as a Fairtrade University for the fourth time for its commitment to fair trade. Since 2018, the university has been regularly awarded this title, which is valid for two years. The award is based on various criteria, including campaigns and information events on the topic of fair trade for the university community as well as the offer of fair trade products in the canteens and bistros. The motivation is to further promote and strengthen awareness of sustainable consumption and social responsibility at various levels of the university.

University of Cologne pedals hard: Over 44,600 kilometres for the climate during city cycling
The University of Cologne diligently collected kilometres during this year's city cycling event from 28 August to 17 September. Around 300 active cyclists, including students, researchers and employees of the university, pedalled hard and covered over 44,600 kilometres. Together, they managed to avoid over 7,400 kg of CO2 emissions. Thanks to the large number of kilometres collected, the University of Cologne also set a strong example for climate-friendly mobility by taking 7th place within the Cologne community. The commitment of all participants not only sent an important signal for more climate protection, but also enabled valuable data to be collected on cycle traffic planning in Cologne.

Keynotes on climate change: Lectures by Prof Dr Jens Beckert and Prof Dr Axel Ockenfels
Prof. Dr Jens Beckert from the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies at the University of Cologne will speak on 26 September, 16:10 - 17:10, as part of his keynote speech on the topic ‘Sold future - an economic-sociological perspective on the challenges of climate change’. The event will take place in lecture theatre 111 in IBW building 211. Prof. Dr Axel Ockenfels from the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods at the University of Cologne will give his keynote speech entitled ‘Climate change: The greatest cooperation problem in human history’ on the following day, 27 September at 10:00 - 11:00. This lecture will also take place in lecture theatre 111 in IBW building 211. Both lectures are open to the public and are part of the programme of the GSÖBW conference on ‘Sustainable transformation of the economy - a challenge for socio-economic research, education and teaching’.

Lecture series ‘Dealing with the climate crisis’
The lecture series ‘Resilience & Active Hope: Dealing with the Climate Crisis’ by HumboldtN in the winter semester 2024/25 deals with the different social reactions to the climate crisis. It examines the range of forms of protest - from peaceful actions to more radical methods that are increasingly provoking opposition. Despite a growing awareness of climate change, different emotions such as anger, fear or hope are processed differently, leading to active or passive reactions. The aim of the lecture is to discuss strategies for dealing with the climate crisis and to develop interdisciplinary explanatory models and argumentation aids for the public debate. The course takes place mainly online and is aimed at students (up to 3 ECTS can be earned), researchers and the interested public.

New Lecture Series in Winter Semester 2024/25: "Modern Earth System Sciences - Complex, Digital, Interdisciplinary"
Human intervention in the Earth's system has made humanity a key component, necessitating a deep understanding of geoscientific interrelations. At the University of Cologne, this topic is addressed interdisciplinarily within the core research area "Intelligent Methods in Earth System Sciences." The lecture series offers eight talks covering topics from paleoclimate research to climatic conditions on other celestial bodies. Service Learning Projects with Non-Profit Organisations
The Service Learning format includes project seminars where participants collaborate with a non-profit organization and, guided by instructors, develop a practice-oriented cooperation project. In the winter semester of 2024, 12 project seminars will be available: For example, there is the opportunity to design and build a shelving system for the food-saving store The Good Food, or to illustrate the conditions in the leather industry in a comic for the organization Südwind e.V. No prior knowledge is required; registration is via KLIPS 2.0 in the second enrollment phase (until 18 September).

Citizen science: On a research tour via app
The collection of learning, experience and activity trails (LEAPs) enable people to explore the environment independently and collect data through targeted observations. So far, LEAPS have been set up on the topic of water at Flehbach and on the topic of urban climate in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine. Various apps from the Geographical Institute can be used at the LEAP locations to document observations and thus record environmental changes over the long term.

On 7 October the 10th NRW Sustainability Conference will take place in Wuppertal. To mark the ten-year anniversary, there will be a stage program and, for the first time, a sustainability fair where up to 60 organizations and institutions will showcase their activities related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will focus on networking and exchanging practical examples from sustainable initiatives and projects.

The DFG Early Career Academy "Transdisciplinary Instruments for Climate Change Adaptation – hei_INSTRUMENTS" at Heidelberg University aims to support early-career researchers by providing them with interdisciplinary approaches and opportunities to lead independent research projects in the field of computer-based climate adaptation strategies.
The hei_INSTRUMENTS Academy includes three mandatory, sequential modules: a three-day academy module in Heidelberg from 10 to 12 October, followed by two one-day colloquia.

„SAVE THE PLANET – KILL YOURSELF“: Music Theater on the Climate Crisis
The Cologne-based theater and performance group ANALOG, in collaboration with studiobühneköln, will stage a music theater piece titled "SAVE THE PLANET – KILL YOURSELF" from 11 to 15 September. Based on the philosophy of antinatalism, which argues that humanity should cease to reproduce, this piece explores the relevance of this extreme approach in the context of the climate crisis and its potential effectiveness in saving the planet.
The event will take place at the outdoor venue of TanzFaktur in the Technologiepark Müngersdorf.

Open Call: „Expanding Narratives“: Photography, Sustainability and International Friendships
Expanding Narratives" is a participatory research project by the University of Cologne and the University of Applied Sciences Cologne in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Tanzania, the Academy of Arts and Cultural Education and the German Institute for Youth and Children's Films.
This project brings together young people from Tanzania and Germany for two parallel hybrid weekends (4 to 6 October 2024 and 7 to 9 March 2025) at the Academy for Arts and Cultural Education in Remscheid and the Goethe Institute Tanzania. Participants will critically, creatively, and analytically explore current narratives and ideas of sustainability in the media, while also having the opportunity to translate their own ideas into photographs.

Europe's Largest Youth Climate Conference: "Local Conference of Youth" in Berlin
From 25 to 27 October, the 7th German Climate Conference in Berlin offers young people the opportunity to discuss solutions to the climate crisis with politicians and representatives from business, science, and society.
The extensive program includes workshops, lectures, role-playing games, and discussion rounds in both German and English. Musical performances, networking opportunities, and games round off the event.
Interested individuals can register either as single participants or in groups of six or more. The organizer covers the costs for registration, accommodation, and meals.

EmpowerESD – Education and Sustainability Coaching for Higher Education Transformation
The German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and network n are launching the two-year project "EmpowerESD: Education and Sustainability Coaching for Higher Education Transformation". The aim is to accelerate the integration of Education for Sustainable Development at universities and ensure the long-term establishment of network n's mobile coaching program through its own financing model. This collaborative project, supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, runs from June 2024 to May 2026 and promotes collaboration among university leaders, educators, and students in transformation processes at universities.

The NKU.Hackathon! enters Its Third Round
In November 2024, the Network Climate Adaptation & Businesses.NRW (NKU) will host the NKU.Hackathon! 3.0. At the NKU.Hackathon!, students from various disciplines can develop and present innovative solutions to climate adaptation challenges. No prior programming knowledge is necessary, and students from advanced bachelor's or master's programs in any field are welcome. The Hackathon will take place virtually from 21 to 24 November, concluding with an event in Düsseldorf on 28 November, where a panel of experts will announce and award the winners with prize money on-site. Prof. Dr. Sanjay Mathur director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences considers the energy issue to be a fundamental aspect of a sustainable future. His research team focuses on advancing materials in chemical nanotechnology with the goal of optimizing their functionality, durability, and resource efficiency. Prof. Dr. Mathur emphasizes that the transition to sustainability also necessitates a materials transition and is engaged in developing innovative substances. Additionally, he explores the use of nanoparticles in medicine for targeted drug delivery and minimizing side effects. Furthermore, he is committed to finding environmentally friendly alternatives to problematic chemicals such as PFAS.

Take part in city cycling for the university team!
From 28 August to 17 September 2024, Cologne will be part of the Germany-wide climate protection campaign STADTRADELN (CITY CYCLING). The University of Cologne will also be taking part this year with its own team and as many sub-teams as possible. Sustain2030 simulation game now available for teaching
The Sustain2030 simulation game is now available to teachers at the UoC and can be used in courses throughout the university (until 7 December 2024, in English and German). Training in Rio de Janeiro – Travel grants for international alumni
International alumni of German universities currently residing outside Germany have the opportunity to participate in the German-speaking training "Sustainability for, by, and against all!?" in Rio de Janeiro, where nearly all travel, accommodation, and meal expenses are covered. The third interdisciplinary summer school of the Alliance for Sustainability NRW (Humboldtⁿ-School) in cooperation with the International Center for Sustainable and Just Transformation (tra:ce, Witten/Herdecke University) will take place at Witten/Herdecke University from September 2 to 4, 2024. This year’s Humboldtⁿ-School focuses on "Planetary Health in NRW – Momentum for Change" from an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. Post-doctoral and PhD students of all subjects from universities and universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia who would like to deepen their knowledge and participate actively in the Summer School are cordially invited. Empirical studies show that social discourses and norms have a greater influence on whether people take action against climate change, while scientific insights play a subordinate role and decisions are often measured by financial considerations. International Summer School „Sustainable Cities and Communities"
The International Summer School “Sustainable Cities and Communities” will take place in cooperation between the University of Cologne and Bharati Vidyapeeth University (Pune, India) from September 30 to October 10 at the Geographical Institute of the University of Cologne. Problem-solving skills are to be developed on the basis of systematic observations and data-oriented integrative analyses. The climate flickers before tippingt
Tipping points in the climate system can be preceded by a slow, linear development or they can be accompanied by a "flicker" in which two stable climatic states alternate before a final transition occurs and the climate tips permanently. A study by the research team of the Universities of Potsdam and Cologne in Germany, Aberystwyth in Wales, Addis Abeba in Ethiopia and other universities confirms this for the end of the African Humid Period (AHP) and the transition to the pronounced aridity that is typical for the region today.

"What is already in the environment is difficult to remove"
As a geologist, Dr. Alexander Kunz thinks in long time spans. During his studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, he focused on the last two million years of the Earth's history. He then became interested in a topic that extends at least as far into the future: microplastics. The ever smaller plastic particles are distributed all over the world - with uncertain effects on humans, animals and ecosystems. The interview was published in the university magazine. Inspiration, networking and collaboration
On 22 April, the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability, the Sustainability Office and the Faculty of Law at the University of Cologne hosted the second Sustainability Forum under the motto "Planetary Responsibility". Around 300 participants from all areas of the university were inspired, discussed and networked as part of academic presentations, a panel discussion, a poster gallery and various breakout sessions.

On the way to becoming a sustainable city
At a time when climate change is posing major challenges to cities and communities, Prof Dr Martina Fuchs and Prof Dr Matthias Pilz, Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne, together with Prof Dr Claudia Ziller, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, have launched the SkillsEco project. The aim of the project is to analyze, to develop and promote sustainability skills in order to make Cologne a greener and more sustainable city. However, the results will not only contribute to Cologne's transformation into a sustainable city but will also serve as a model for other regions.

Joint USB clean-up campaign
In order to make the outdoor area around the university library a greener place for rest and relaxation, the USB is organising a clean-up campaign in cooperation with the Green Office Initiative on 24 April from 10 am to 2 pm. University of Cologne puts its own photovoltaic system into operation
The University of Cologne has put its own photovoltaic system into operation on the Student Service Centre (SSC) building on Universitätsstraße. The almost 300 photovoltaic modules generate 105,000 kilowatt hours of electrical energy per year, reducing the university's CO2 emissions by around 50,000 kilograms. The expansion of sustainable energy sources is part of the university's sustainability strategy.

The DFG is modernising the rules for equipment funding and is calling for and promoting the sustainable use of equipment. Among other things, DFG funds can now be used for project-related repairs. Funding can also be applied for to upgrade existing equipment instead of purchasing new equipment.

Software shows adaptation of plants to climate change
Climate change also affects the growth of plants and biodiversity in the soil. In order to make the effects tangible, researchers at TH Köln and the University of Cologne have worked with students to develop a technical solution that can be used to conduct experiments and visualise the results using software. The software developed will be freely usable as an open educational resource after the end of the project and can be used in teaching, for example.

Digital learning units for higher education
The educational concept “Education for Sustainable Development” (ESD) has steadily increased in social relevance in recent years. In this context, the Institute for Geography Didactics at the University of Cologne under the direction of Prof. Dr. Alexandra Budke developed various digital learning units as Open Educational Resources (OER) for higher education. The aim is to qualify prospective teachers and educators to teach ESD-relevant content and issues and to convey them in extracurricular educational settings.

New branch office for ecological research
In future, ecological research at the University of Cologne will also take place in the new, sustainably constructed science center in Rees-Bienen. The cooperation between Cologne Ecology and the Nature Conservation Center in the Kleve district has resulted in a modern science center in the Rhine floodplain in the Lower Rhine region. The branch of the Institute of Zoology enables a close integration of teaching, research and practice. In addition, the new building is not only used for research into ecology, but the new building itself is also a model for sustainable structural design.

ASA scholarship for students
Anyone between the ages of 21 and 30 who is studying in Germany, has completed their bachelor's degree in the last 18 months or has completed vocational training can apply for an ASA scholarship until January 20, 2024. ASA is a global exchange and scholarship program for young people who want to get involved in a sustainable way. It includes a three to six-month project phase in countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Southeastern Europe as well as seminars for preparation and follow-up. One example project is the creation of transparent supply chains in coffee production in Guinea.

First Sustainability Forum
The first Sustainability Forum, hosted by the University and University Hospital in the MIT Lecture Hall Building, was held on Feb. 9, 2023. Approximately 250 people from across the University and University Hospital gathered to learn, network, and expand plans for sustainable transformation. The event was overshadowed by the sudden death of Ms. Kiendler-Scharr, a renowned climate scientist at our university who also wanted to be involved in this event.
