Best-selling Authors discuss Literary Processing of the Past

An evening of talks on July 5 with the authors and lawyers Philippe Sands (‘The Ratline’, ‘East West Street’) and Bernhard Schlink (‘The Granddaughter’, ‘The Reader’)

The Academy for European Human Rights Protection of the University of Cologne and the Law Forum Foundation invite you to a joint evening of talks on Wednesday, 5 July 2023, at 6:00 p.m., entitled ‘Justice, Literature and Remembrance’ in Cologne. The authors and lawyers Philippe Sands and Bernhard Schlink take the great catastrophes of modern German history as the starting point for their most recent narratives. What contribution does literary work make to the past alongside historical and legal research? What moral and political demands does it have to meet? These questions will be looked at in depth in the conversation moderated by the author and journalist Géraldine Schwarz.

In his story ‘The Ratline – Love, Lies and Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive’ (2021), the British-French writer Philippe Sands outlines the escape story of SS officer Otto Wächter. Based on private letters and diaries belonging to the Wächter family, Sands provides insights into the strategic networks of National Socialist collaborators. At the same time, the way in which Wächter’s son views his life today is also a topic.

Bernhard Schlink's story ‘The Granddaughter’ (2021) also depicts an escape – that of a GDR female citizen. The novel is about contradictory memories, repressed guilt and the struggle for different world views.
