Programme Outline
The beneficiaries of the DAAD Leadership for Africa programme arrive in Germany in April or May to start an intensive German language course. In October, they move to the city of their respective universities - which could be anywhere from Aachen to Zwickau - and start a Master's programme, which could be anything from aerospace engineering to zoology.
At the end of the first academic semester, LEAD! brings the students together and accompanies them for an academic year.
Kick-off:
Online start of the programme in March/April.
Summer Semester:
The focus of the online events during the summer semester is on imparting basic concepts and knowledge. A lecture series covers public policy, good governance, natural resource allocation, conflict studies and empowerment. A workshop running in parallel focusses on sustainability, exploring the concept behind the United Nations' Agenda 2030 and local initiatives to improve people's livelihoods.
Summer School:
One week of learning and training at the University of Cologne in August includes presentations by professors from key research areas, excursions, Model United Nations debates and intercultural training.
Winter Semester:
The online formats during the winter semester focus on practical preparation for the job market, including presentation techniques, job application training and the development of individual development plans through intensive mentoring in small groups.
Wrap Up:
The final event in Cologne offers every student the opportunity to present their Individual Development Plans and reflect on their academic journey after almost two years in Germany. Participants who participated at least 70% of the programme will receive a certificate.
