Call for the 2023 University Prize in the Category Teaching and Learning

As a cosmopolitan and research-oriented university of the 21st century, the University of Cologne is committed to its responsibility for excellence in teaching and learning in its mission statement.

The University prize for teaching honours those from the University of Cologne who have fulfilled this responsibility to a particular extent through their teaching/learning offers or projects. And who in addition have promoted the self-image of the University of Cologne in their teaching and learning in an exemplary manner:
The prize is awarded to people who have demonstrated innovative strength and exceptional commitment in the conception and/or implementation of a teaching/learning programme or project thus achieving an outstanding performance.
 

Basic content criteria

The teaching/learning offer or project

  • is characterized by a particularly exemplary, successful and forward-looking implementation of the mission statement of teaching and learning as well as the quality objectives,
  • is innovatively designed,
  • has the potential to transform teaching and learning at the University of Cologne,
  • is exemplary for teaching and learning a) in the Faculty, b) in the university and c) beyond the university,
  • is characterized by being particularly student-focussed.
  • The promotion of digital education (in line with the concept of the University of Cologne) is to be taken into account in all project proposals.

Formal criteria

The teaching/learning offer or project

  • is a course, a self-study programme, a workshop, a lab, a project or a programme that creates space and opportunity for learning,
  • was designed individually or collaboratively as a team,
  • has already been performed,
  • is no longer than 3 years ago and
  • has been evaluated by learners (positive evaluation results are available, or: If no evaluation results are substantiated: positive, written, anonymous evaluations of the project by learners are available).

Who can put candidates forward?

Anyone from the University of Cologne, including explicitly the students, are very cordially invited to submit proposals for the University Prize Teaching and Learning.
 

Which candidates can be put forward?

Anyone from the University of Cologne who are currently working there can be nominated. This explicitly includes students as well as student offers and projects.
 

Submission

  • Please use the nomination form for submission and fill it out completely.
  • Please enclose a detailed presentation of the teaching/learning offer or project (3 to 5 pages). Key questions for the presentation can be found on the nomination form.
  • Please attach the evaluation results for the teaching/learning offer or project. These are archived in the Faculties. If no evaluation results are (can be) substantiated, a positive, written, anonymous assessment of the project by the learners must be submitted.
  • Optionally, you are welcome to enclose a statement or a letter of recommendation (e.g. the Dean of the Faculty or the head of the central institution or student interest groups) (max. 5 pages).
  • Please merge all documents into one PDF file and submit your proposal on time.
  • End of the submission period: 06 October 2023 23:59 hrs. (deadline) Please note: The deadline is the date of the e-mail sent to the Rectorate.
    Only fully completed and timely proposals will be taken into account.

Who decides the price award?

The Rectorate of the University of Cologne decides on the award of the prize on the recommendation of the Teaching and Learning Committee and based on students’ interests.
 

Awards

The prizes will be awarded on the occasion of the annual reception of the Rector on 23 January 2024.

End of the submission period: 6 October 2023, 23:59 hrs.

Proposals must be submitted to the Rectorate by 6 October 2023, 23:59 hrs, exclusively by e-mail. Please note: The deadline is the date of the email sent to the Rectorate. Proposals that are not received until 7 October 2023 can no longer be considered.
