Stadtradeln 2024

From August 28 to September 17, 2024, Cologne will be part of the nationwide climate protection initiative STADTRADELN (City Cycling). https://www.stadtradeln.de/koeln

What is STADTRADELN?

STADTRADELN is an initiative of the Klima-Bündnis e.V., aimed at promoting cycling, advancing climate protection, and raising awareness for sustainable mobility. In this annual event, cities, towns, and districts compete in a friendly contest to cycle as many kilometers as possible. All citizens are invited to participate and contribute to the environment.

The University of Cologne will also participate this year with its own team and as many sub-teams as possible. Join in with your institute, department, student council, or as an individual! Whether you cycle to seminars, the supermarket, for a weekend trip, or to a date, every kilometer you ride during this period counts!

By participating, we make a statement for climate protection and the promotion of cycling. The more kilometers we accumulate, the stronger the message from Cologne, our university, and particularly your institutes. The collected anonymized data will also be scientifically processed and made available to the city of Cologne to enable a more needs-based expansion of cycling infrastructure.

You don’t need major cycling ambitions. Ordinary cycling is completely sufficient. By participating, however, you will cycle much more consciously. You can track the distance ridden directly through an app or enter it later.

And there is a bit of competition after all

You collect kilometers not only for yourself but also for your sub-team, which in turn contributes to the University of Cologne team. We will compete with other institutes and the university with other institutions, especially other Cologne universities and schools.

Everyone can participate. All those who work or study in Cologne can participate. The kilometers ridden can also be in the leisure area.

How to participate

1. Register on stadtradeln.de:

Select Cologne as the municipality, and the University of Cologne as the team. If you want to join an existing sub-team, you can also select it directly here. You can also use the following invitation link: STADTRADELN Registration

2. Create a sub-team

Once registered and logged in, you can create a sub-team for an institute or other small group under "My Team" in the "Team Options" section. In the official ranking, all kilometers ridden count towards the university, but this way, we can also compete internally.

3. Download the app

For the event, there is a free STADTRADELN app for Android and Apple. You can record and directly submit routes with integrated GPS tracking after logging in. You will receive the download link with the registration confirmation.

The app also offers another advantage: The cycling data collected is scientifically evaluated by the Klima-Bündnis, completely anonymized, and provides the city of Cologne with information on important traffic planning issues such as: Where and when are how many cyclists on the road, where does the traffic flow stagnate, where are wait times at traffic lights disproportionately long? This allows for a more needs-based expansion of the cycling infrastructure.

Or use another GPS tracker or speedometer: If you do not want to use the app, you can alternatively install another GPS tracker on your phone. If you prefer the classic analog way, you can also mount a speedometer on your bike. In these cases, you must log in to STADTRADELN via the internet and enter the kilometers manually.

4. Start cycling and count kilometers
