Die SALON-Reihe des Cologne International Forum startet im Sommersemester in eine neue, spannende Runde – und wir laden Sie herzlich ein, dabei zu sein!
Bei unserer ersten Veranstaltung am 29. April beschäftigen wir uns mit der drängenden Frage nach der Zukunft Syriens. Die Kölner Rechtswissenschaftlerin Anan Alsheikh Haidar erörtert gemeinsam mit der Journalistin Isabel Schayani und Völkerrechtler Prof. Claus Kreß wie das neue Interimsregime Syriens zentrale Herausforderungen bewältigt – von Sicherheitsfragen über wirtschaftliche Stabilisierung bis hin zum ideellen und strukturellen Umgang mit den vorangegangenen Menschenrechtsverletzungen.
Diese Veranstaltung findet in Kooperation mit dem Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL) und dem Institute for International Peace and Law statt.
Weitere Veranstaltung des SALONs widmen sich dem Kampf der Bakterien im Reagenzglas, bemerkenswerten Studien zu Ameisen sowie der Auswirkungen globaler Entwicklung auf die europäische Einigkeit und Elif Shafaks Perspektive auf den Zusammenhang von Gender und Migration. Wir laden herzlich zum Zuhören, Verstehen, Verbinden und Diskutieren ein.
Die Teilnahme am SALON ist kostenfrei und steht allen Interessierten offen. Die Veranstaltungen sind englischsprachig und finden im International House (Kringsweg 6) statt. The SALON series of the Cologne International Forum is kicking off a new event series in the summer semester 2025 – and we kindly invite you to be part of it!
At our first SALON evening on April 29, we will address the pressing question of Syria's future., Anan Alsheikh Haidar, a legal scholar from the University of Cologne, will present her view on Syria’s current situation and engage in a discussion with journalist Isabel Schayani, and international law professor Claus Kreß on how Syria’s new interim regime can tackle key challenges – from security issues and economic stabilization to handling previous human rights violations.
This event is organized in collaboration with the Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL) and the Institute for International Peace and Law.
Further SALON events will focus on the battle of bacteria in the petri dish, remarkable studies on ants, the impact of global development on European unity, and Elif Shafak’s perspective on the connection between gender and migration. Together we will gain insight, deepen our understanding and discuss our thoughts.

Anan Alsheikh Haidar is a Research Fellow at the Institute for International Peace and Security Law at the University of Cologne. Previously, she served as a Phillipp Schwartz Fellow at the institute from July 2016 to December 2018. Dr. Haidar holds a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Reading where she also completed her Master of Laws (L.L.M) in Advanced Legal Studies, as a Chevening Scholar. Her legal education began at the University of Damascus, Syria, where she obtained Diploma in Law. Throughout her academic career, she focused on international criminal law and international human rights law.
Dr. Haidar is a member of the Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law.
Claus Kreß has been Professor of Criminal Law and International Law at the University of Cologne since 2004. He holds the Chair of German and International Criminal Law and is Director of the Institute for International Peace and Security Law. Professor Kreß is also a founding member of the Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL).
Isabel Schayani is a journalist and moderator specializing in political and social issues. Since 2016, she has been responsible for the WDRforyou project, which is designed for refugees and presents itself in four languages. Isabel Schayani is known for her precise analysis and committed reporting, especially on migration, integration and international crises. She has received several awards for her journalistic work, including the Grimme Prize.
