In the current Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, the University of Cologne is ranked 157th internationally out of a total of 2,092 universities that took part. This is an improvement of three places from 160th in the previous year. Cologne is now in the top eight per cent worldwide; in 2023 it was in the top nine per cent. The university also improved its position by one place in national comparison, and is now ranked 14th out of the 50 German universities listed.

This is measured by third-party funding income from industry partners and the number of citations of research results attributable to the university in patents.

To calculate the positions in the ranking, 17 indicators from the areas of teaching, research environment, research quality, internationality and industry are taken into account.
