Albertus Magnus Professor 2022 Eva Illouz is particularly concerned with the question of how consumer capitalism and the culture of modernity have transformed our emotional and love lives. The sociologist will present her research in two lectures and a public seminar. Illouz examines societal influences on the formation of emotions, the production and transformation of emotional patterns, and the role of mass media and its influence on complex emotions, especially on the private culture of romantic relationships.

Eva Illouz (*1961) is Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Directrice d'études at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris, one of the most prestigious humanities and social science research institutions in France. In 2012 she became president of the Bezalel School of the Arts, and in 2013 she received the Anneliese Maier Research Award. She has been a visiting professor at Princeton University and in 2019 Niklas Luhmann Visiting Professor in Bielefeld. Eva Illouz's books have been translated into 18 languages.
Eva Illouz's Albertus Magnus Professorship was originally planned for 2020, but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following scholars such as Douglas R. Hofstadter, Georges Didi-Huberman, Judith Butler, Noam Chomsky, Bruno Latour, John Searle, and Martha Nussbaum, Eva Illouz is the sixteenth person of international renown to be awarded the Albertus Magnus Professorship, which was established in 2005. The professorship is named after the medieval polymath Albertus Magnus, who directed the general studies of the Dominican Order in Cologne in the mid-13th century and is considered one of the intellectual fathers of the university founded in 1388.
