System Accreditation for the University of Cologne

The Accreditation Council has awarded a system accreditation quality seal to the University of Cologne for the next eight years / With this award, the university has reached a new milestone towards assuring the quality and development of teaching, learning and studying.

The Accreditation Council’s decision affirms the university’s quality management system ‘Q³UoC’, and its ability to put processes and structures in place that regularly evaluate and develop more than 300 high quality degree programmes.  The seal enables the university to award legally valid accreditations and re-accreditations independently and in internal procedures.

“We are extremely proud that we have managed to successfully develop and realize Q³UoC within just three and a half years, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic,” says Professor Beatrix Busse, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Studies. Stakeholders from all faculties and departments of the university were, and continue to be, involved in the development and implementation process of Q³UoC using co-creative and dialogue-oriented methods.

According to Beatrix Busse, “in addition to the already existing quality management system, new quality management committees were brought to life. These accompany, and further develop, the system at the strategic, normative and operational levels. The central team ‘Q³ – Evaluation, Development & Accreditation’ is led by Dr Sabine Koch and Sarah Smikale and supports the central processes of quality development of teaching, learning and studying in close cooperation with the quality managers of the Faculties.”

“The seal of the Accreditation Council is a milestone for the University of Cologne in its commitment to excellent education and research. I am pleased that the university will continuously review and improve its degree programmes in a structured process through system accreditation, thereby setting new standards. This means that the University of Cologne will be absolutely competitive and future-oriented for the coming years,” says the Rector of the University of Cologne, Professor Dr Dr h.c. Axel Freimuth.
