Jun.-Prof. Dr. Karolin Schäfer

Since 2017, Karolin Schäfer is a junior professor at the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, focussing on pedagogics and rehabilitation for people who are deaf and hard of hearing (Audiopedagogics).
In November, 2017, she was elected as a board member of the Junior Faculty Club, representing the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Cologne.

Karolin Schäfer studied rehabilitation sciences and specialized in the field of speech therapy and early intervention at the TU Dortmund from 2001-2005. Subsequently, she worked as a speech therapist at a Cochlear Implant Center and other practices, mostly with children and adults who were deaf or hard of hearing. From 2008 till 2014, she worked at a company selling electronic communication aids for people using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and later as a divisional manager.

2013, she obtained her PhD in Audiopaedagogics. Her thesis focussed on early diagnosis of infants with progredient and late-onset hearing loss, using parent questionnaires as a screening tool in pediatric practices. From 2008 till 2014, she worked as a lecturer in the fields of Audiopaedagogics and speech therapy at the University of Cologne.

From 2014 till 2017, Karolin Schäfer worked as a lecturer in the field of AAC and at the AAC Research and Consultation Center at the University of Cologne.
