Preamble

The University of Cologne, a 21^st century cosmopolitan and leading research university, acknowledges its responsibility for excellence in teaching and learning with the following guidelines. The university systematically strives towards promoting excellent intra- and interdisciplinary education and skills based on cutting-edge research. In doing so, the university has an impact within and beyond academia, in the city of Cologne, in Europe, regionally, nationally, and globally. It draws just as much on its regional-urban location and its responsibility for its past, as on its international network and reputation. The University of Cologne is part of the European University for Well-Being (EUniWell).

The University of Cologne is committed to use its existing innovative power to find solutions for the great challenges of the present and the future. The concrete organization of teaching and learning aligns with these guidelines. With respect and appreciation for the different disciplines and subject cultures, everyone at the University of Cologne commits to, and aligns their activities with, the realization and continuous development of these guidelines.

1. Human dignity, democracy, and freedom are the foundation of our education

Grounded by reliable science and research, the University of Cologne ensures and promotes professional, interdisciplinary education and skills, which is rooted in the responsibility for respecting human dignity and for preserving peace, freedom, equality, democracy, diversity and tolerance. Founded upon a humanistic view of humankind, the University of Cologne is guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It understands education as a right to development, as well as an obligation to act in a socially responsible manner, and commits itself to educational equity and inclusion. This educational concept demands diversity awareness and resolutely opposes any form of discrimination.

2. We stand for unifying excellent research and teaching from the start

On the basis of nationally and internationally renowned basic and transformative research, science and innovation that is realized through the interplay of generations, the University of Cologne practices research-based teaching and learning from the start. In doing so, it utilizes its potential as a comprehensive university for excellent subject-specific and interdisciplinary education, as well as for the holistic promotion of skills that require knowledge of a variety of theories, models and methods, empowering students to apply and further develop these skills.

The University of Cologne promotes a scientific habitus characterized by critical, reflective, and rational thinking and action, as well as the perpetual pursuit of new knowledge. It is based on scientific and ethical integrity, the rules of good scientific practice, and is characterized by a systematic scientific approach. The University of Cologne also relies on an intradisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approach.

3. We stand for an inspiring and constantly-renewed culture of quality , teaching, and learning

The University of Cologne promotes and realizes educational and professionalization processes in cooperation with teachers and students. It commits to modernizing the teacher-learning culture and creating the best conditions and spaces for innovative teaching and learning. It promotes an inspiring, performance-oriented, participative and supportive teacher-learning culture,  as well as a culture of free discourse and debate, particularly characterized by mutual respect and constructive feedback. The University of Cologne ensures that all its stakeholders in teaching and learning, regardless of their socio-cultural backgrounds, individual circumstances and personal ambitions, can discover and develop their potential, talents, and interests and continue their education in flexible formats throughout their lives. Diversity is understood as inspiration for innovation and knowledge, and therefore promotes internationality, multilingualism, and interculturality, as well as study and career paths within and beyond academia.

4. We stand for social responsibility, dialogue, and transfer 

The University of Cologne cultivates all stakeholders in teaching and learning in order that they may contribute scientific findings that have a lasting impact on society and contribute solutions to the great challenges of our time.  As shapers of the future, stakeholders are also empowered to be resilient, to act as lifelong learners, and to lead successful and satisfied lives, both personally and professionally. They can contribute their competencies, knowledge, skills, and experiences as critical and constructive thinkers and  socially responsible European citizens in a team-oriented and communicative manner. They are enabled to initiate processes of renewal and to take responsibility for themselves and their community, society, and the environment.

A high degree of personal ethical and professional responsibility for all academic professions to which it professionalizes is an important concern at the University of Cologne. The decisions, judgments, and actions of these professionals can have a significant impact on the personal integrity of those entrusted to them, as well as on the living conditions and framework conditions of their fellow human beings. This is especially true for teacher education. For this reason, the University of Cologne creates the prerequisites for all students at the university to be able to acquire both differentiated and diverse knowledge about influences, consequences, and alternative courses of action, as well as to understand how to apply this knowledge in complex, dynamic, and sometimes seemingly contradictory situations.

The University of Cologne also supports the digital sovereignty of all stakeholders and works towards an informed, critically reflected, ethically and socially-responsible handling of small and big data as well as artificial intelligence. In this way, the University of Cologne realizes teaching and learning that, considering the past and present, orients itself toward the opportunities and challenges of the future. The University of Cologne approaches these challenges innovatively, creatively, and with initiative.

The mission statement for teaching and learning was unanimously adopted by the Senate of the University of Cologne on 19 January 2022. Under the leadership of Professor Dr. Beatrix Busse, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Learning, it was developed in a co-creative, participatory process in which representatives from all areas of the university and all status groups actively participated. It forms the basis for the realisation and further development of learning and teaching at the University of Cologne.

Die Universität zu Köln gewährleistet auf Grundlage einer vertrauenswürdigen Wissenschaft und Forschung eine fachliche und überfachliche Bildung und Kompetenzförderung, die auf der Verantwortung für die Achtung der Menschenwürde, für die Wahrung von Frieden, Freiheit und Gleichheit, für Demokratie, Vielfalt, Toleranz gründet. Auf dem Fundament eines humanistisch geprägten Menschenbildes orientiert sie sich an den Nachhaltigkeitszielen der UN. Sie begreift Bildung als Recht auf Entwicklung und Verpflichtung zu sozial verantwortlichem Agieren und setzt sich ein für Bildungsgerechtigkeit und Inklusion. Dieses Bildungskonzept fordert die Anerkennung von Diversität und wendet sich entschieden gegen jede Form von Diskriminierung.

Auf der Basis national wie international renommierter Grundlagen- und transformativer Forschung, Wissenschaft und Innovation, die im Zusammenspiel der Generationen realisiert werden, praktiziert die Universität zu Köln von Beginn an forschungsbasiertes Lehren und Lernen. Dabei nutzt sie ihr Potenzial als Volluniversität für exzellente fachliche und überfachliche Bildung sowie für die ganzheitliche Förderung von Kompetenzen, die die Kenntnis einer Vielfalt von Theorien, Modellen und Methoden einschließen und zu deren Anwendung und Weiterentwicklung befähigen.

Die Universität zu Köln fördert einen wissenschaftlichen Habitus, der durch kritisches, reflektiertes und rationales Denken und Handeln sowie immerwährendes Streben nach neuer Erkenntnis gekennzeichnet ist. Er basiert auf wissenschaftlicher und ethischer Integrität, den Regeln guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis und ist geprägt durch eine systematische wissenschaftliche Arbeitsweise. Die Universität zu Köln setzt dabei ebenso auf eine disziplinäre, interdisziplinäre wie transdisziplinäre Herangehensweise.

Die Universität zu Köln fördert und realisiert Bildungs- und Professionalisierungsprozesse in Zusammenarbeit von Lehrenden und Studierenden. Sie setzt sich für die Modernisierung der Lehr-Lernkultur ein und schafft beste Bedingungen und Lehr-Lernorte für innovatives Lehren und Lernen. Sie fördert eine inspirierende, leistungsorientierte, partizipative und unterstützende Lehr-Lernkultur sowie freie Diskurs- und Debattenkultur, die in besonderem Maße durch gegenseitige Wertschätzung und durch konstruktives Feedback charakterisiert ist. Die Universität zu Köln setzt sich dafür ein, dass alle Akteur*innen in Studium und Lehre unabhängig von ihren sozio-kulturellen Hintergründen, individuellen Lebenslagen und persönlichen Ambitionen ihre Potentiale, Talente und Interessen entdecken und entfalten und lebenslang in flexiblen Formaten weiter bilden können. Sie versteht Diversität als inspirierend für Innovation und Erkenntnis, fördert deshalb auch Internationalität, Mehrsprachigkeit und Interkulturalität ebenso wie Studien- und Karrierewege innerhalb und außerhalb der Wissenschaft.

Die Universität zu Köln fördert alle Akteur*innen in Studium und Lehre dahingehend, dass diese wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse mit nachhaltiger Wirkung in die Gesellschaft einbringen und dazu beitragen, Lösungen für die großen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit zu finden. Als Gestalter*innen von Zukunft werden sie in Verantwortung für sich und ihr Umfeld zu einem persönlich wie beruflich erfolgreichen Leben, zu Resilienz und Well-Being sowie zum lebenslangen Lernen befähigt. Sie sollen ihre Kompetenzen, ihr Wissen, ihre Fertigkeiten und Erfahrungen als kritische und konstruktive Denker*innen und als sozial verantwortungsvolle globale Bürger*innen teamfähig und kommunikativ versiert einbringen. Sie werden befähigt, Erneuerungsprozesse zu initiieren sowie Verantwortung für sich und ihr Umfeld, die Gesellschaft und die Umwelt zu übernehmen.

Ein hohes Maß an persönlicher ethischer und fachlicher Verantwortung ist der Universität zu Köln ein wichtiges Anliegen für all die akademischen Berufe, zu denen sie professionalisiert. Denn das Entscheiden, Urteilen und Handeln derjenigen, die in ihnen wirken, kann die persönliche Integrität der ihnen Anvertrauten und Vertrauenden, aber auch die Lebens- und Rahmenbedingungen der Mitmenschen erheblich beeinflussen. Dies gilt insbesondere auch für die Lehrer*innenbildung. Deshalb schafft die Universität zu Köln die Voraussetzungen, dass alle Studierenden der Universität sowohl differenziertes und vielfältiges Wissen über Einflüsse, Folgen und Handlungsalternativen erwerben können als auch dieses in komplexen, dynamischen und bisweilen widersprüchlich erscheinenden Konstellationen anzuwenden verstehen.

Die Universität zu Köln unterstützt zudem die digitale Souveränität aller Akteur*innen und wirkt auf einen informierten, kritisch reflektierten, ethisch und sozial verantwortlichen Umgang mit small and big data sowie mit künstlicher Intelligenz hin. Auf diese Weise realisiert die Universität zu Köln ein Lehren und Lernen, das im Wissen um Vergangenheit und Gegenwart auf die Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen der Zukunft ausgerichtet ist. Diese Herausforderungen gehen wir innovativ, kreativ und eigeninitiativ an.

Das Leitbild Studium und Lehre wurde am 19.01.2022 einstimmig vom Senat der Universität zu Köln verabschiedet. Unter Leitung von Professorin Dr. Beatrix Busse, Prorektorin für Lehre und Studium, wurde es in einem ko-kreativen, partizipativen Prozess erarbeitet, an dem Vertreter*innen aller Bereiche der Universität und aller Statusgruppen aktiv mitgewirkt haben. Es bildet die Grundlage für die Realisierung und Weiterentwicklung des Lernens und Lehrens an der Universität zu Köln.
