Storytelling in Academia
Contents
The amount and complexity of data available to researchers is growing fast. This means more researchers are publishing, and more frequently. What’s more, researchers face the challenge of making their findings available to a broad, international audience, much of which is online. The challenge, therefore, is how to get your research to stand out while remaining true to the conventions of science writing in your field. What’s needed is a clear narrative.
On this dynamic workshop, you’ll deepen your understanding of your audience, the value of your research, and how a story is the best place for the two of them to meet. You will then discover and begin to craft the story of your research with a renewed sense of why you and your readers should care, i.e. what’s at stake. Employing proven storytelling techniques, your writing will not only become clearer, but more impactful and memorable as well.
Seminar contents
• Learning why readers read, and writers write
• Understanding how story communicates value
• Discovering the elements common to all stories
• Identifying the narrative of your research
• Applying narrative frameworks to abstracts, introductions and whole papers
• Peer review’ – receiving feedback on your stories from your colleagues
You will be asked in advance to submit a max 1000-word text (e.g. an abstract, or a suggested narrative for a paper) to the trainer for individual feedback.
Please note: Our training programme is designed for the interaction of the participants. Comparable to classroom seminars, we ask you to turn on your camera during online events for an exchange at eye level.

Aufbaukurs Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM/RDM): Wie schreibe ich einen Datenmanagementplan (DMP)?
Contents

Professional Leadership
Contents
Please note: The language of the event will be German or English, depending on the needs of the participants.
As a university professor, you act in various roles and manage manifold responsibilities that come with holding a leadership position in research (acquisition of third party funding, leading an organizational unit, contributing to the academic self-administration, etc.). To retain the freedom to pursue one’s own research, it is vitally important to make the most effective use of your staff resources, to focus and to prioritize.
In the workshop, you will reflect upon your different tasks as an academic leader. The seminar provides you with useful tools for successfully managing your team in a variety of sometimes challenging situations. The leadership guidelines of the UoC build the basis to unfold a whole set of skills for thoughtful and effective social interaction.
Some theoretical approaches will be supplemented by sharing ‘best practices’ in various tasks. During the workshop, you will also have the opportunity to discuss your individual questions about "leading in research/an academic field".

Intermediate Leadership
Contents
The positions of junior research group leaders and experienced postdocs are often described as a challenging “sandwich position”. On the one hand, in these positions, you lead single researchers or an entire scientific team, on the other hand you are dependent on the heads of departments etc. This requires competencies in leading a team as well as in lateral leadership.
One aim of the seminar is to introduce you to the tools needed to lead a team successfully. As a basic model, the approach of transformational leadership will be introduced. Further, you will reflect on the different expectations others have of you in your specific leadership role and get to know instruments for clarifying such expectations in discussions.
Seminar contents:
• Model of team leadership, fundamentals of transformational leadership
• Leadership guidelines at the University of Cologne
• Expectation management in a “sandwich position”
• Motivation and delegation in a scientific working environment
• Master difficult discussions/feedback with team members and on lateral level solution-orientated

In Führung gehen – Promovierende erfolgreich betreuen
Contents
In Führung gehen – Promovierende erfolgreich betreuen
