Information on animal testing in research and teaching at the University of Cologne

Animal testing is vital at present in both basic and applied research. Researchers have a special moral, ethical and legal obligation to weigh up the gains of biomedical knowledge for the benefit of humans and animals and the related suffering of animals. This is a personal moral responsibility that needs to be shouldered. The handling of and testing on animals are carried out in compliance with the 3R Principle. This also means reducing the number of animal tests to a minimum.

Our employees are committed to a responsible and dignified approach to animals, animal welfare and the underpinning laws. Our principles in the handling of lab animals can be taken from our guidelines (Guidelines of the University of Cologne on the Handling of Animals in Research and Teaching).
