„The best way to take care of the future is to take care of the present moment.“ (Thich Nhat Hanh)
The Albertus Magnus Center welcomed 20 Early Career Researchers of the University of Cologne to its Virtual AMC Summer Reception on September 14, 2020. Doctoral candidates and postdocs from all faculties came together for an interactive exchange on the topic “Well-being in Scientific Life”. The event was held in cooperation with the Occupational Health Management.
Working in science gives pleasure and offers positive challenges. But it is also often accompanied by growing demands, pressure to perform and a high workload. Ongoing stressful situations often have consequences for mental and physical health. Together with the external trainer, Dr. Jana Bäuerlen, the participants discussed in an interdisciplinary exchange the reasons for stress, as well as possibilities for stress reduction that can help to remain powerful and calm in the academic workday to become more aware of the own resources. At the end, the participants were informed about the support and advisory services at the University of Cologne.
Despite the virtual format, it was a vibrant exchange with inspiring break-out sessions and a relaxed summer atmosphere.
"I wish to learn to make friends with my stress in the future."
"I wish I would think more regularly actively about my health/ stress level."
"I like to see that other people are taking this topic seriously. I wish for myself to be more aware of my stressors and to better find out how to react to it (or even better, how to prevent getting too stressed)."
"I like that it is possible to network and to "meet" new people in events like this one. I am ready to help other people if they need help."
"I like the point of seeing stress as something normal and necessary and put emphasis on promoting health rather than completely avoiding stress."
"I like the interactive breakout sessions. I do find this event helpful. It is nice to be able to talk to somebody outside of my working group."
