Investigating the conditions of inclusion can lead us to highlight both subtle, hidden and more obvious manifestations of exclusion. This investigation enables an ethnography of institutions and organisation, from the inside out. The moving dynamics of becoming outsiders on the inside, allows researchers to highlight practices for making and reproducing spaces, whilst also identifying modes through which collectivities come together to disrupt the historical and conceptual connections between bodies and spaces. The lecture will draw on a vast range of research spanning multiple types of organisations, including parliaments, museums, universities and public sites, to offer an analytical framework.
