THE Rankings: University of Cologne improves its international position by twelve places, coming in at 145

University of Cologne is among the best 150 universities worldwide and among the top ten per cent in the categories ‘research’ and ‘knowledge transfer’

In the international Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the University of Cologne (UoC) continues to improve its position. It now comes in at 145th place among the total of 1,527 evaluated higher education institutions around the world – an improvement by twelve places compared to the previous year. With this result, the UoC now belongs to the best 150 universities in the world. In the national context, it now ranks 17th out of the 48 German universities that took part.

For the first time, the University of Cologne has come in among the top 20 percent in all five categories (‘teaching’, ‘research’, ‘research impact’, ‘knowledge transfer’, and ‘international diversity’). In the areas ‘research’ and ‘knowledge transfer’, the UoC is in the top ten per cent worldwide.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the most influential university rankings and aims to evaluate universities according to their main tasks of research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international diversity. The results are subject to an independent audit. With more than 1,500 universities assessed worldwide, the THE Rankings is also one of the most comprehensive rankings.
