Completely digital: The Cologne Summer Schools in times of Corona

Summer School for international students as online workshops / Topic: Perspectives and Visions of Digital Societies

Next Monday, July 27th the annual Cologne Summer School organized by the International Office launches its first online edition. The interdisciplinary three-week summer course sponsored by the Santander Bank usually takes place at the University of Cologne and immerses the international students coming from partner universities world-wide into German academic and student life as well as German culture. Due to the limitations regarding travel and group events Cologne Summer Schools start their virtual journey.

The 20 participants coming from 10 partner universities in USA, UK, Spain, Brazil, China, the Netherlands, Russia, Argentina, Mexico, and the Czech Republic will be addressing various topics related to Digitization and its implications for the fields of law, business, health, communications and social media, education and politics. The main focus of the summer school is developing a toolbox with the essential competencies of a digitally literate citizen.

„Postponing the course to the next year has never been an option, especially regarding the fact that the topic is digitization. We need discussions on this topic more than ever and are excited to explore new digital tools and methods which hopefully give our participants a ‚real-life‘ academic and intercultural feeling“, comments Victoria Busch, coordinator of the program.

The online workshops will be conducted by renowned lecturers of the University of Cologne such as Prof. Dr. med Christiane Woopen as well as by international lecturers from estimated partner institutions in the USA, Canada and Finland.
