Sun Yat-sen University
The Global Network Partnership between the University of Cologne and the Sun Yat-sen University was established on 24th of May, 2005. On 19th of October, 2011, Rector Freimuth and Professor Wei Minhai (Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University) signed an intention of memorandum of understanding. One year later, Professor Bollig successfully finalized the negotiation process; the universities now have the status of being each other’s priority partners in their respective countries.
Cooperation projects between the University of Cologne and Sun Yat-sen University are primarily in the disciplines of Geography, German Philology, Sinology, Byzantine Studies, Economic and Social Sciences as well as Physics. The collaboration work comprises, for example, undergraduate and postgraduate student exchange programs, joint publication projects as well as cooperative research projects. One example in this context is the research project of Professor Frauke Krass and her team in Guangzhou regarding the challenges of a “megacity”.
Sun Yat-sen University is ranked as one of the best universities in southern China and is annually rated as the one of the top universities in the Chinese ranking system. As a university of the prestigious 211 and 985 projects, it receives extensive funding from the Chinese government.
