Online AMC Summer Reception 'Unconscious Bias in Academia'
Friday, 18 June 2021, from 2 - 4 PM
The university is a place of bright minds. What counts is qualification, performance and the best argument. Of course, these aspects should be considered regardless of gender, origin or appearance. But is that even possible?
Often we are not aware of how strongly our perception is shaped by stereotypes and unconscious biases. The term 'unconscious bias' describes distortion effects of our perception which we are not aware of. These distortions arise in connection with stereotypes and are directly related to social discrimination processes. They affect our judgements, our decision-making and eventually our actions, even if we think we are acting fairly.
In this interdisciplinary exchange, doctoral candidates and postdocs of the University of Cologne are invited to get a first insight into the topics of unconscious bias and discrimination processes in academia and in society. In addition to short research-based inputs, there will be space for collegial discussion and reflection exercises. In addition, we will discuss how to avoid stereotype based judgement.
This event will be held in English and via zoom. Please register until May 01, 2021 via the following link.
