Faculties, doctoral degrees and different paths to your doctorate
The University of Cologne is divided into six faculties. The faculties in turn are structured into institutes, professional groups and/or departments. Individual doctoral studies
The most common path to obtain a doctorate or PhD in Germany is by individual doctoral studies. Here, doctoral candidates are expected to contact a suitable professor (called “Doktorvater” or “Doktormutter”) for the supervision of their dissertation project. Read more

The number of structured doctoral programs offered at the University of Cologne has increased significantly in the last years. These programs are labeled according to their scope and funding background (Graduate School, International Research Training Group, Innovative Training Group, Research School etc.). Finding a supervisor
In most disciplines, working towards a doctorate takes three to five years. Therefore, having the support of a suitable supervisor is crucial. Many doctoral programs utilize a two-staged selection process. Based on their written application, eligible candidates are invited for interviews, symposia or summer schools.
