Start-up and innovation
The area start-up and innovation combines the exploitation of research results with entrepreneurial activities. Cologne is the economic and scientific centre of the Rhineland, with around 100,000 students and a lively start-up culture. With the GATEWAY Start-up Service, the Digital Hub Cologne and the university start-up network cologne (hochschulgründernetz cologne e.V.), transfer structures with networks to the university environment are already in place.
In 2017, the University raised a considerable amount of private foundation funds to finance the construction of a new Innovation Centre from 2019 onwards. In addition to student start-ups, the centre will also focus on innovation transfer from the Clusters of Excellence and the Key Profile Areas of the University of Cologne. Through close cooperation with the Center for Data and Simulation Science, it will promote the development of digital innovations based on current scientific findings. In addition, the Innovation Centre will participate in new training and further education programmes in order to meet the growing demand from students and companies for competence in the areas of entrepreneurship, digitization, innovation and transfer.
