ULDETIS: Ultrasensitive Detection of Isotopes

ULDETIS is a unique collaboration between geoscientists and nuclear physicists. It is designed to exploit the synergies expected from joining traditionally isolated, complementary specialist expertise in order to achieve common field-defining goals. ULDETIS aims to develop techniques to detect trace amounts of radioactive and non-radioactive isotopes and to apply them to fundamental and applied research questions. ULDETIS will improve and combine techniques connected to Accelerator and Inductively Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrometry, (AMS/ICP-MS) and high-resolution spectroscopy of radiation. To achieve these goals, new techniques for sample preparation and innovative use of digital data acquisition will be developed.
Due to the versatile nature of these techniques, the research topics that will be tackled as a result of these developments cover topics in geo- and cosmochemistry, nuclear physics, nuclear chemistry, environmental sciences, and archeology. The bracket of this diverse research is the unique joint research infrastructure and methodological expertise available at University of Cologne.
