How are doctoral researchers in Germany doing?
New results from the National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) are now available online. At nacaps-datenportal.de, in addition to evaluations of the 2019 doctoral student survey, the results of the 2021 survey with more than 10,000 participants at over 60 universities can now also be accessed. The portal provides an overview of the doctoral conditions, career intentions and general living conditions of doctoral researchers.

The results are presented in the portal in the form of indicators. These are grouped into seven thematic areas:
▪ Working and employment conditions
▪ Supervision situation
▪ Type and structure of doctorate
▪ Motives for doing a doctorate and the course of the doctorate
▪ Career paths and prospects after the doctorate
▪ Mobility
▪ Living situation / personal background

A differentiated evaluation is currently being carried out internally at the University of Cologne and will be presented and discussed at a dialogue event in early 2023.

Nacaps – A Study on Doctoral Candidates in Germany

The University of Cologne is partner of the National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) of the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW). Nacaps is a longitudinal study on doctoral candidates and doctorate holders.

Nacaps generates versatile research data on the study conditions for doctorates, career aims and professional development, as well as on the general life situation of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany. The first results of the study are accessible via a data portal: www.nacaps-datenportal.de.

What are the reasons for participating in Nacaps?

How you yourself experience a doctorate at the University of Cologne, what experiences you have had and what additional support you might have wished for, can be the feedback for the University of Cologne via participation in Nacaps.

Your feedback is important for us: Your experiences and impressions will help us to think together about doctorates for current and future doctoral candidates at the University of Cologne. By participating in Nacaps, you have the opportunity to actively set new impulses and help influence higher education and science policy. The results of the survey flow into scientific publications and serve as a basis for political reporting, such as the four-yearly "Bundesbericht Wissenschaftlicher Nachwuchs" (BuWiN). Your participation will influence future decisions, which are relevant for early career researchers.

Take part! Your feedback counts.

Expected in spring 2023, we will again invite doctoral students to participate in the study. You will receive a link via email that grants you access to take part in the online survey. We would like to encourage you to take part!

Even if you feel that you did not follow the usual path to, or during your doctoral studies, your participation is very important because only with a wide range of respondents can we gain a full picture of the doctorate landscape. This also applies if you discontinue your doctorate in the meantime or if you only came to Germany for your doctorate or if you intend to leave Germany after completing your doctorate.

Scientific research, HEIs and educational policy will benefit from this information – and so will you yourself as a doctoral candidate!
