Program for teachers with a refugee background at the University of Cologne

You worked as a teacher in your home country and live as a refugee in Germany? We are looking forward to your application!

In the annual program for further qualification (1 August, 2020 - 31 July 2021) you will be prepared for a C1 German examination (TELC/DSH/TestDaF) in German language courses. You will get an insight into the educational system in Germany accompanied by the university. Furthermore, seminars in which you will get to know the German school system are offered. Based on that you will work on current topics in teacher training. Each participant is individually advised concerning his or her career prospects. The program is conducted in cooperation between the International Office, the Mercator Institute for Literacy and Language Education/the Intercultural Education Research Department and the Centre for Teacher Education (ZfL) at the University of Cologne.

In order to apply, you must provide evidence of at least one subject that is offered in the teacher training program at the University of Cologne. You can find an overview here (only available in German). (If you click on the individual teacher training courses at the bottom of the page, you will find the respective subjects offered.)

The deadline is 11 March 2020.

  • The application must be submitted in person & complete by 11 March 2020 (deadline) during office hours of the International Office of the University of Cologne.
  • Office hours for the submission of the documents at the International Office of the University of Cologne between 05 February 2020 and 11 March 2020 are:

    • Tuesday: 10 am - 12.30 pm
    • Wednesday: 4 - 6 pm ( (Please note: On Wednesday, 12 February 2020, our office hours do not take place. On this day the Service Point is open from 4 - 6 pm and only general questions can be answered.)

Participation in the program does not guarantee direct employment as a teacher at a German school. You will be counseled throughout the program concerning alternative options.
