Global Responsibility

Based on our main pillars – Capacity Building, Academic Refugee Support and Community Engagement – the Global Responsibility Unit at the International Office of the University of Cologne is in charge of facilitating and enhancing exchange with academic partners in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, providing refugees with academic assistance and extending its network with Cologne’s corporate world.

The department was founded in 2013 as “Cooperation with the Global South” within the International Office. This was partially in response to the DAAD and BMBF establishing the “Global South” as a key area for development. The department attempted to unify activities in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, and acts as the administrative counterpart to the “Global South Studies Center” which was founded in 2014 in order to further develop the Key Profile Area IV of the Excellence Initiative.

In 2019, the department was renamed “Global Responsibility” and had its aims and purpose redefined, in order to be in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) from the German Federal Government.

Our projects seek to bridge the gaps between the Academic and Professional realities of a multitude of countries under development by using the resources and findings from University of Cologne, Germany and Europe. As such, many of them may fall into different areas and its interdisciplinary and diverse outreach is what enriches them most of the time. Above vou might find a brief mapping of our current projects to better understand the scope of our activities:
